Hey all

It's been pointed out to me that of late this community has suddenly been overrun with little bits of fic inspired by three random words. This is something which started in amidst the normal random chatter on Buzz and has become a bit of a meme.

However, I know not everyone is on Buzz. So, I'm explaining it properly here. If you're not on Buzz and think this looks cool, then feel free to drop a comment here. What people have been doing on Buzz is listing their PCs and then everyone tries to think of three random words for them. They then write some random fic based on those words.

I hope you all enjoy the fic that has been produced as much as I have been.

OK, so these are maybe a little silly and are totally dominated by what I want to read. But I feel comfortable abusing my modly powers.

July's challenge is going to be Scenage.

So much happens in scenes. So many scenes get referred to in passing - on LJ, in buzz, at games. Well, now is the time to write about what happens in them. If you're not a downtime scene kind of person, write up something that happened at a game. I don't mind, but I don't want background scenes. I want you to be writing about events which have happened whilst your character is in play and which features at least one other PC.

August's challenge is going to be Summer Loving?.

This is a silly challenge, and was sparked by a recent conversation about Rex/Moorcroft slashfic (which I am totally willing to read, by the way). I want you to come up with the most improbable, implausible, traffic wreck-ish and hideous romantic combinations known to mankind.

I know this is silly, but feel free to be sensible with it if you want. Write about your PC's most awful and destructive IC relationship ever. Write about the way your PC's heart fell apart when their true love left them. I guess that comes under the ending of 'IC romantic train wreck'.

Or, alternatively, be silly! Write gushing purple prose. Write slashfic. Make the pairings totally AU. Write me nonsense. Make them cross venue. Write about the tragic love which can never be between Mark Dourif and Father Gabriel. Or maybe not that one. It's sort of freaking me out. But that's what I want to see.

I know these are a little silly, and I'll find something slightly more clever, I think, for September. You can write either challenge at any point during this period.

Once again, I'm hideously late with the challenge. I really do need to get these out on time.

But anyway, have two challenges together and until the end of June to do them both.

May's challenge, in response to the large amount of character death that's been happening lately, is going to be 'the deceased'. You can take that however you want - you can write about your deceased characters, about your current character and those who are now deceased. You can write about your character's NPC mother and her tragic death if you like. I don't mind, but somewhere in the story there must be someone who is now deceased in the game world.

June's challenge, in response to something else entirely, is 'villainy'. Now, you can do what you want with this, but I would ideally like to read about people's characters in situations in which they are not the good guys, because I think we all get a little bit too used to thinking about our PCs as the heroes of their own tales, and forget how often they are the villains for other people.

Thank you for your patience in bearing with me, and considering my occasional mod's block on the subject of the writing challenges, do feel free to throw any suggestions for July and August's challenges my way in the very near future.

Thank you!

Again, I've let it get terribly late in the month before putting up the March challenge, so therefore I'm once again putting up the March and April challenges at the same time, and giving you guys until the end of April to do both (or either).

The March challenge is going to be 'Spring'.

This can be 'Spring' in the changeling sense, which means that stories about desire would totaly count. This can be 'Spring' in the sense of 'new beginnings' or 'rebirth'. It could just be 'Spring' in terms of the time of year, and I'm happy for people to write stories about what your character is doing, as he or she walks through the daffodils.

The April challenge is going to be 'Music'.

You can write stories inspired by a song. You can all write a dozen little musicals based on your favourite game. You can write up the title sequence or music video, for your favourite venue or character. You can just write about which songs your character likes the most, but I want there to be a musical theme.

I look forward to reading them all!

[identity profile] annwfyn.livejournal.com
So, two writing challenges in one. You have until the beginning of March to do either.

They are as follows:

January.

This was suggested to me by someone, and I'm not too proud to steal an idea. The theme for January is 'endings'. We all, after all, get attached to our characters. We want them to keep going, but every story has an ending. So write your own ending. It can be the ending you'd like, the ending you fear, or the ending you expect. It could be character death, or them riding off into the sunset. It can even be a write up of an old character's end, if you want. The only requirement is that it has to be an ending.

February.

As it's my birthday, I did consider making February 'write things about Sally's characters' month, but decided that upon reflection, that was unfair. However, I will note that I consider prose featuring my PCs to be a perfectly lovely birthday present and I'm sure that lots of you can do that. February also contains Valentine's Day, but I don't think this comm needs any more stories of romantic love. I am, therefore, going to ask you all to write about non-romantic love. Any other kind of love is fine - sisterly, brotherly, parental, friendship, or even devotion to a cause. I just want it to be a story about a kind of love or passion.

You have until March. Go! Write!

Oh my! It's January 15th! This means that I'm hideously behind with giving you guys a monthly writing challenge, for which I am terribly sorry.

Now, I have a vague idea for a challenge for February, and a vague idea for one for January, but I don't know if people feel there is enough of January left, or if they would rather have the Feb challenge early and extra time to write about that in.

Opinions?

Hello boys and girls!

It's December, which means a new writing challenge for [community profile] writing_shadows. Now, anyone who knows me can guess what this means.

CHRISTMAS

The theme for this month will be 'Christmas'. Interpret that as you will. If you're a horrible Scrooge, then write me stories about the dark and soul crushing loneliness of this time of year. If you're a very serious pagan who wants to explain to me how Christmas was stolen from the pagans, then you can, as long as your explanation comes in IoD fic form and doesn't try and claim that the ancient Celts ate turkey at this time of year. If you just want to write stories about what your PC is doing this Christmas, then I would love that more than anything.

Just fill up this comm with Christmas stories. That will make me happy and full of glee!

So, boys and girls.

First of all, thank you very very much for all your Elseworlds. They were wonderful and lovely and I loved them all.

And now, for the next challenge. Again, a tiny bit early, but I figured I'd give you some time to consider it.

In November, I want you all to write about the real world. This could be 'tell me a story about your character and their allies and contacts'. It could be 'write me a 'day in the life' type story, about your PCs daily routine' (although if your PC lives their life in the Hedge, avoiding humanity, then it might not work so well). It could be 'tell me about your background, about the human you were before you became a supernatural'. It could be 'write me Mortals prose', because I am a generous beastie.

Basically, I don't mind. I just want stories which remind us that our characters do live in the real world, have lives between games, and need to get by day to day, just like everyone else.

Or, y'know, maybe not like everyone else if you're a rock star/gangster/drugs dealer/call girl/millionaire playboy. But I want to hear about those too.

So, Kath recently posted a story which was about her GIR character. And, as the GIR character had once been a CamUK Mortals character, and as the theme of this month's writing challenge has been 'elseworlds', this is all totally and utterly fine. But it got me thinking.

The Isle of Darkness split from the Camarilla a while ago, and I kinda figured that this comm went with it. However, I know some of our members are still members of the Camarilla, through GIR, and I don't know if they want to post stories here, if the members feel that would be appropriate or what.

Therefore, in the name of democracy, I offer a poll!

I'm not going to be kicking anyone off the comm - I like the current policy we have of giving any members of the Isle of Darkness, or the Camarilla from when we were part of that society, access to the comm. Posting access is something I might look at if it ever comes up, but so far it hasn't.

I'm just pondering what kind of stories should or should not be posted here.

Opinions?

OK, so this is a little bit early, but [profile] mistress_fran sold me on an idea yesterday and I couldn't wait to share it with everyone.

I've decided that the theme for the October [community profile] writing_shadows writing challenge will be 'elseworlds'. Elseworlds is is the name for a line of DC Comics that take place outside the company's canon. According to its tagline: "In Elseworlds, heroes are taken from their usual settings and put into strange times and places — some that have existed, and others that can't, couldn't or shouldn't exist. The result is stories that make characters who are as familiar as yesterday seem as fresh as tomorrow."

I want to take that idea and apply it to the Isle of Darkness. This can mean almost anything. You could write about an Elseworld in which Rosalba is Giselle in Enchanted. You could write about and Elseworld in which Stitches is Hannibal Lector. To take another track, you could write about an Elseworld in which a bunch of PCs were not taken by the Fae, and Rosie, Rosalba, Aidan and Jack in the Smoke all met in the 1950s, as normal humans (to cite the four characters who I know were all born in the 1930s and 1940s). Equally, you could write about an Elseworld in which one small change happened - Aria chose Cormac instead of Carin, or Wednesday's Child ran off with Sallow. Finally, you could just write about your character pondering the road's not taken. I'm sure there are also lots of interpretations of 'Elseworlds' that I've not thought of yet, and I'm open to interpretation, but that's the theme for October.

Elseworld.

What could be happening out there, somewhere in an alternate reality.

So, the first of the [community profile] writing_shadows challenge. This may be monthly, sporadic, or one off, depending on uptake, response, and my ability to remember to do this.

However, the initial challenge I'd like to set everyone is to write about someone else's character. This could be something as simple as writing about your character's feelings for another character (do you have True Love? Arch Nemesis? Evil Overlord?), or it could be a write up of a scene with you and another character. It could be a joint piece of background (and I know there are a chunk of these about), or it could be a write up of that report you got after stalking someone's PC for a month.

But write about someone else's PC, because we all (and I know I'm as bad as anyone) prone towards the introspective in our writing, and I want to know more about the relationships between the different characters out there.

So, I've been considering trying to do a little bit more with this comm. Something I've been thinking about is making doing a weekly writing challenge. It would just be for fun, but I thought some people might enjoy stretching themselves slightly, and maybe doing something a little different.

Some of the ideas I had for a weekly writing challenge were:

1) Write a story about a venue without many stories - ie - Promethean.

2) Write a story which features a character which is not yours, although your character can also be in the story.

3) Do a write up of a recent scene you've been involved in.

4) Write a story based on a theme - ie - snow, loss, sunshine etc.

Would anyone be interested in that kind of thing? And if so, does anyone have any other ideas for challenges?

So, I have been informed that there is an Isle of Darkness fanzine is being put together, and I've been asked whether it would be possible to maybe snag some of the lovely stories from here for it.

Obviously, I'd love to see these stories getting a wider airing, but I won't submit any stories without permission. However, just to save me time, do let me know if you really don't want any stories from here put forward for the Isle of Darkness fanzine.

As well as that, I've been looking through the stories that have been posted up here, and I'm noticing that we are still hugely skewed towards Changeling: the Lost. Therefore I'm asking for submissions for stories for the other venues. Mage: the Awakening and Vampire: the Requiem would be especially appreciated. If anyone has any ideas for a story in that venue, now would be a lovely time. And I'll give prizes* to whoever's stories go in the fanzine.

*These will probably be virtual prizes and fairly low value. But you will get my love and devotion along with them.

Hey

This is a quick post to welcome our new members - [profile] miss_electra and [profile] renfield286. In addition, I wanted to state that although this community is primarily for members of the Camarilla UK, I'm quite happy for any interested Americans to join and post.

This is also a quick post to encourage those of you who haven't yet posted anything to put something up. It would be lovely to see at least one short story from everyone who is a member of this community up here.

I've also noticed that at the moment the majority of stories are from the Changeling: Lost venue. This is fab, as it's my favourite venue, but I'd love to see some Mage, or some Requiem, or some Forsaken prose or even some Promethean prose as well.

*looks hopefully at her membership*

I'll offer a prize to anyone who writes me a story from a venue that hasn't been represented on [community profile] writing_shadows before.

Welcome!

Welcome to the successor to [community profile] shadow_writers. I apologise for the very unimaginative name, but it turns out that I'm not quite as good with such things as [profile] quisalan.

Anyway, now we've got a few more folk on here, I'm going to follow in Krystyna's steps some more, and try and encourage everyone to try and post an introductory story. If you've got something lying around already, then post it. If you have an idea in your head, then go for it.

Basically, I'd love to have this community be a bit more active than [community profile] shadow_writers has been and recreate some of the wonderful atmosphere of creativity and storymaking that marked the community in the old days.

So, if people could aim to stick something up over the next couple of days, or maybe the next week or so if you're really stuck, that would be fantastic.

Many thanks!
