From the background there was an almighty bang.
"Oh fuck."
Holly swore down the phone. "Mum, I'm going back. The Winnie just tipped fucking over."
Then there was a click and the phone hung up.
Rio felt slightly sick. She tried to put the phone back in the pocket of her jeans but her hands were shaking too much. What the hell was Lennie doing.
She swore. She walked to the door, and then stopped.
Go back? Don't go back. Damnit.
Rio pushed her hands through her hair. Good memories. Bad memories. Memories as sharp as glass of her husband the last time she had seen him, twisted and barely human. Older memories of her husband helping her bathe Holly in the sink; her husband whispering in her ear "Rio Knight...you're trouble..."; her husband staring at her in blank amazement the first time she told him "are you going to kiss me or not? Because I'm getting bored of waiting". Older memories yet, cold as corpses, of a smashing window and raised voices and then an old faced Elodoth explaining that Mummy would be coming home anymore.
She stared at her phone again. No phone call from Holly. Damnit, her teenage daughter shouldn't be having to deal with this. She should call someone. But who? Had to be Uratha. Had to be pack. Anything else felt wrong, felt intrusive. There were things you didn't let outsiders into.
She walked back to the bed. Her hands were still shaking and the sickness in her belly wasn't going away. She couldn't do this. She couldn't sit in a bedroom miles away whilst her husband tore himself apart, but every single time she stood up to go to her car, it felt like her legs were giving way again.
"Get a grip, Rio," she said, but it didn't exactly help.
In Karei's house everything was quiet. Rio sat for a while on the bed, staring at the telephone in her hand. The quiet didn't help. She could still hear the crashing sound, hear the panic in her daughter's voice.
Rio stared at the telephone and sighed.
She typed a text message to Holly.
"Where are you?"
Then she got up and headed for her car.
