Saffron curled up, exhausted from weeping, on her bed. Her wastepaper bin was full to overflowing with used tissues. Her head ached and her eyes were sore.
Her thoughts went back, time and again, to Jon’s message. She still didn’t believe it. She didn’t want to believe it.
Part of her had expected him to die on Sunday. His selling of the contract and his survival had been something that had brought her hope by the lunchtime. She had hoped …
It didn’t matter what she had hoped. Not now. Not now that he had left her.
Grief overwhelmed her again and she hugged the pillows tightly. She lay there in the darkness of her room, not aware enough to pull the blinds and close the curtains.
The alarm going off surprised her. She had actually fallen asleep. Saffron dragged herself into the shower. She had work to do – their hedgebeast to check on and then her normal work as a vet. She didn’t want to know right now. Everything she did reminded her of Jon.
Saffron closed her eyes as the water from the shower cascaded over her. She would get through it all, one minute at a time. She couldn’t think more than a minute or so ahead right now.
Each breath hurt.
She didn’t know what Spring intended now for her. But she would serve.
