[Forsaken] - Valentine's

1990 - Mum and Dad spent the night in Dresden while Sergeant Baker babysat and taught five officer brats to play poker. Twenty years later I'll still be using the skills she taught us to catch out lies in the interview room.

1991 - Mum tries to spend the night in Dresden with Dad, but he's dead and we're in Aldershot. My Valentine prospects are poor, as apparently girls like bad boys.

1992 - Mum the same. Attempting to drown a classmate in the fish pond apparently hasn't qualified me for 'attractive bad boy' status.

1993-1999 - Lean teenage years. Having to be home by six to stop your mother eating something toxic or just plain nasty by mistake is not something that impresses most teenage girls.

2000 - First year of University; first actual Valentine's date. Stephanie Grey. Dumps me the day after because 'it felt wrong to do it on Valentine's day'. I mention that waiting didn't help much and she invites me to 'be like that then'.

2001, 2002 - Joanne.

2003 - Text from Joanne to say she isn't coming back from the States for at least three years. It is, to be fair, my choice not to join her.

2004-2006 - Lean.

2007 - Meg Tailor, fellow DC. I break that one off in June after I found out that she took Snowdon's money.

2008-2010 - Lean.

2011 - Isabelle.

I had better bloody live until Valentine's.
