Isabelle stared at the box in Raph’s hand. She didn’t know it, but she looked horrified.

What if, she thought, this is a necklace? What if he forgot when my birthday is and he’s trying to be sweet and romantic? What if it’s a brooch of his mother’s he wants me to have. It’s not a ring, Isabelle. Do not get yourself worked up. There is no way he’s asking you to marry him. It hasn’t even been a year. Do not build yourself up to disappointment.

She looked down at Raph – Raphael Knight, her childhood sweetheart – kneeling down. And, her heart already sinking, she opened the box.

It was an engagement ring. A gorgeous one, too. She wondered how he could afford it with all that money being invested in the business, with his penchant for cars and steak, and-

“Did Rio put you up to this?” It slipped out before she could stop it. She could tell it was exactly the wrong thing to say from his expression.

"... No." He looked offended, taking the box back and getting annoyed. "Fuck’s sake. Just forget I said anything."

She wished she could pull the words out of the air, put them back in her mouth and swallow, taking them back and making them forgotten. "No, I- Sure, okay, whatever.”

Ignore it. Yeah, sure. How does that work? She’d never found a way to do that, much to her chagrin. But that’s how things went.

She looked up at him and saw that that had been the wrong thing to say too.

"Seriously?" He shoved the box in his pocket. "All you can ask is if Rio put me up to this? Yeah, I fucking love you too!"

Raph kicked her desk, his anger boiling off him in almost palpable waves. Isabelle slid back, and soon was running from him.

Not soon enough.

Time shrank and expanded both at once as she dove out the window and under a car. And then another car. She’d forgotten how much pain and terror drove out of people’s mind, but she had plenty of both to remind her now.

She snapped Mal’s stupid talen – no, not so stupid after all – as she felt Raph shift back. It was all she could think to do.

And it was the last thought she had at all before she was consumed by the pain.
