He sat on his little fold out stool on the beach, nothing there but the night sky and the waves. He lifted the saxophone case up and undid the latch, opening it slowly and checking the instrument over for missing parts. He put the case down on the ground and turned the sax around so it was resting a bit more comfortably as he fitted a reed into the neck and started to tune the instrument, making sure nothing was out of place. Then he started to play.

The world slipped away a little bit as he lost himself in the music and opened up his heart to the moon. He was by no means a good Saxist, but he wasn't terrible at it and it was a good instrument to play from the heart with. He played no tune in particular, letting his mind choose where his fingers would move to next and trying to play out the thoughts in his head.
Nansi had gotten the better of him. He'd actually made him loose his temper and that made him feel ashamed at his own weakness. As an ogre, his lack of control was legend and he hated it. If he could be trusted to lose his temper like a normal person would then it would have been at least more constructive then the often explosive results of when thomas lost control of himself. Maybe he was too close to this particular case, and it touched a nerve that made holding himself back hard. He was not an Onyx Thane, and this connection that he had to his emotions when it came to women was probably holding him back from power in the court. But he could deal with that, as long as people were safe. And soon, they would be.
For Thomas wasn't playing just any sad old song. He was playing a Dirge.
