Pete looked at the frazzled halogen bulb above his head. It was frustrating he couldn’t replace it. He knew how to replace it – it involved pulling and popping and twisting. - but his big, ape hands meant he just couldn’t get any purchase on it. Fortunately Cold Blind Whistley Man said he’d look into it for him, which was good. He needed some illumination so he could read, instead of relying on the single bulb that worked in his tiny abode.
After his trip to Essex, Pete had been busy with his library cards. He now had lots of people who could borrow books if they wanted to, all marked down with names he could remember easily taken from books. Dryad; Rock Biter; Gilderoy Lockhart; Fiver; Griffin; Hedonismbot. Some of the people who had helped him with his courts. And the courts were the big decision he was struggling with.
He’d already crossed out North, South, East, West, Dawn, Dusk, Night, Day, Elephant, Donkey and Winter on his list of possible courts to join. He had crossed out Summer, but people had told him that being angry someone hurt Red Panda Lady was a very Summer thing to do, so he had reinstated it.
Spring. Desire. Pete – he was by now getting used to being called Pete – didn’t really desire much. He was lonely, so he desired company. He also liked bananas, chocolate, cookies and Destiny’s Child. But really his only desire was to help other people by looking after books. He did like that Spring was about parties and cake, too. And Ascetic Dust Man had told him that he should do the opposite of what he’d done back There for It. Spring seemed to be a good option.
But then See-through Man had told him he couldn’t be in Spring because he wasn’t beautiful, and only beautiful people were allowed to be in Spring. That complicated things.
Next was Autumn. Autumn had been explained by Red Panda Lady and Watcher Man. They had said it was about gaining knowledge. Pete did like to read books, and look after books. But he knew he wasn’t smart. He was also uncertain about fear. Pete didn’t like being afraid. He didn’t want to focus on being scared of things, even if it was about overcoming fear and accepting it. It didn’t seem very happy, which is what he wanted to be. He also wanted knowledge, though. It was a hard choice to make.
And last, Summer. He had scratched out Summer right away, because he didn’t like smashing things. However, he did know he was good at smashing things, and when someone was hurting Red Panda Lady and Flower Lady and Cold Blind Whistley Man and Rock he had been angry. He had even tried to find them and SMASH them until they stopped. He STILL wanted to SMASH them.
And Summer was also about dedication, and being focused on a particular purpose. He could be a dedicated book guardian, and just try not to think about being angry...
Pete sighed, slouching in his chair. This wasn’t going to be easy.

Date: 2010-01-31 02:38 pm (UTC)I think you need to talk to someone about fear. Rea, if you cxan get past her crippling insecurity talking, is actually ok on the courts. She's done the speech enough times.
Of course, she's about as social as a rabis nun, but...
