I used to be someone else. Or ... I was me, but I was someone else as well. I needed that to stop, but I didn't know how to ask for help. So I lied.

This is the story of how my lie changed the world.

There are not so many of you left who were there when it began, or even were there when air and earth and fire and water took human form and, with shouting and punches speeches and confusion, saved me. But it doesn't matter. I don't care if you were there or you weren't. You're still my heroes.

I believed -- I still believe -- that a meaningless reality accepts the meaning we wish to impose on it. And we, more than anyone else, have had the opportunity to impose our meaning. You were close to the Doomsday Device, maybe -- that could be it. Whatever it was that placed you close to the centre of things, well, I'm glad it was you.

Man, am I glad it was you guys.

And we're almost done, but it wouldn't be magic if it didn't come down to the last minute. The bad guy always comes up with one last trick from up his sleeve. That's just how it works, I'm afraid. Those are the rules. I didn't make 'em up; they've always been there. And I never saw them so clearly as now.

So here I am, with my comic books and my magic tomes and my tarot cards and my dice and toys spread out on the living room floor, with scissors and sticky tape to put together the magic spell that the good guys will use to save the world, or remake it ... because that's what the good guys do.

And I will make it worthy of you.

I choose a few words from a wise old wizard, and I begin my invocation:
