Life was simple
But she came
With a smile on her lips
And a song on her skin and
With a thousand complications
Made it simpler still.
Beneath the calm surface
Still waters run deep
Where many have drowned.
In a flutter of red and gold she hides
Sharp claws and
Sharper wisdom.
Every step is planned with precision and grace
Like a dance
Or a game of chess.
In the shade of her wings she will tear at you
And give you shelter.
Confidence flows from her
Wave upon wave, yet
In her breast
Her heart flutters like a caged bird.
She sits
Small and brittle
One easy to overlook.
But on the wall
Her shadow
Towers.
In the bustle of the crowd
In the heat of the room
He sees nothing
But two golden eyes.
She cuts with words and then
All smiles she nestles close
The blood staining her crest.
She speaks of cruelty
But in this crowd
She seems as fine and fair as any saint.
I knew my mind
I knew my heart
And it all made sense.
But she mocks my knowledge and shows me
The limits of my science.
Bathing in dust,
Her feathers shine.
However besmirched,
She always comes clean.
In the light of day she revels
To be the wicked one
And in the shadowed secrecy of night
Performs her kindnesses.
But she came
With a smile on her lips
And a song on her skin and
With a thousand complications
Made it simpler still.
