[Forsaken - Eve] Three Little Words
((OOC: Also posted to my character journal so apologies if you get this twice.))
"I love you."
Those three words were echoing through her head and keeping her awake. She carefully disentangled herself from his arms and slipped quietly out of bed. Grabbing her dressing gown from where it lay on the floor, she wrapped around herself before carefully sliding open the door which led to the balcony.
The many layered streets of Mont Saint Michel spread out below her, the street lights making the whole place glitter like a strange giant stone cake with many candles. The breeze was cold with this place pretty much surrounded by the sea and she shivered slightly as she leaned against the balcony. Without risking waking him by getting changed and heading out for a walk though it was the only place here she could have peace to think in.
"I love you."
What did he have to go and say it for? It changed things in her head, made everything suddenly more serious and she didn't entirely know how to cope with that. It was simple not to think about such things, to just enjoy company and sex. To just spend time with someone and not worry what they wanted out of it in the end, not to think about where it was going or why.
Now those words were hanging over her head like the sword of Damocles, just waiting to strike. Because she couldn't return them. She didn't know if she loved him, didn't know if she would and didn't really want to think about it at the moment anyway. And while he had said that he didn't need to hear them back, that everything was fine, she was sure that if time dragged onwards and they went unsaid he'd start to feel bad and to question everything and then... then it was just a matter of time before everything exploded.
"I love you."
She'd only ever used those words to one person and that was Mum and that had been in her note when she was trying to run away from it all again.
"I love you."
Damn it, why did those words sound too much like goodbye in her head?
