The inky blue sky glittered with sprinkled crystals above her, the smudge of milky way showing clearly in the sweet Spring evening. A cool breeze rustled her hair, silver in the moonlight. Her grey eyes in the light of day usually glistened as the sunlight off flowing river water, but now they were shut to the world, ignoring the beauty around her. She sat on the cold wooden bench, the light of the streetlamp further along the path casting her shadow like a veil on to the ground before her.

She doesn't notice as a shadow crosses the moon above her. An owl silently surveying the dark open field and the path on which she sits. Usually the students walk home this way, but it was too late for that now. Dawn would peak over the rooftops soon and Sally knew she should sleep but her shut eyelids held no tiredness now. Her body longed to dance, to feel strong arms around her, guiding her and keeping her safe. It filled her, forcing a single teardrop from below her lashes and down her shadowed cheek.

She crosses her arms, hugging herself. Keeping it in. Keeping in the pain and the fear and the lonelyness. The loneliness that ate at her, chafing her insides, her heart lying uneasily in her chest. Its rhythm now synchronizing with the footsteps that appear at the end of the path. She let them come closer. The hardened rubber soles of his shoes touching the tarmac softly in the stillness. Her heart contracted and she knew she would let him tonight. He had been asking her every day with the flowers and the chocolates. The promises to protect her.

The footsteps stopped and after a moment a silky masculine voice caressed her ears.
"Sally."

This is my first attempt at publishing any of the fiction I have written in any way, so please be gentle. Criticism is welcome.

Liam looks at his reflection in the mirror, staring into his own eyes, trying to see what’s inside.  "Is this mirror cracked?"

“What the hell are you doing Liam?” He thinks to himself as he continues to stare into the mirror.  “If you go and let go even a little you’ll kill her and not only kill her…You’ll do much…Much worse…”

Liam looks around the room; he is in a public toilet on the way back to Inverness.  It reeks of piss and the walls are covered with graffiti, most of which is inviting the reader to all kinds of sexual decadence.

“Why did you agree to meet her?  Why did you agree to hurt her?  Why did you say you’d take her to her limits?  You can’t control your own fucking limits!”  Liam punches the mirror and it cracks under the weight of his blow.

“I knew this mirror was cracked…”
