"Hide your love, hide your hate," Liam rattled off with casual glumness, explaining the rules by which I live my life to the whole room.
I could feel my ears burn as he continued, though my smirk remained infallible (but then, I've been practicing that almost my entire life, so why wouldn't it?). How dare he? How dare he tell people these things?
I cast my gaze around the room. Rex wouldn't care either way. Snaggle...Snaggle already knew, he just didn't care. Ella was one of us, and could do with having it spelled out for her. Tor had been one of us, and kept his mouth shut, so that was fine. Jack...Jack. Would it change things for him? Was he even listening? His expression was bored, but then so was mine.
He wasn't a faker, though. Or if he was, he was really good.
Would he figure it out? Would he figure it all out?
I brought my fingers up to do scare quotes when Liam said "only show affection in the appropriate areas." Distraction. Prestidigitation. These were our tools. You don't tell people how the trick works. You let them figure it out for themselves, or stew in the mystery.
You don't tell people.
It was stupid. This whole thing was stupid. I refused to be shaken by this. I'd walked in here bold as brass, and I was fine. People would forget it all. It was hardly important.
It was only the most important thing in the world.
And if I acted upset at all, people would know that.
Suddenly I got it, and practically laughed. I looked at Liam, at his despairing face.
He was going to be an excellent monarch.
