The third paintball was a surprise. Not just to her as she was falling softly to the ground, but to the others. She could tell the way they shouted. Was that someone asking for a time o-

Ow! A fourth came. The third she thought was by accident-

A fifth shot! She didn't understand. She was laying down like they'd been told to if they got shot twice. Should she get off the field? Did she have to go home?

The sixth and seventh came in rapid succession. Rose could feel a welt rising on her cheek, her eyes watering. She was trying to pretend to be dead. Why was this happening?

The next three shots didn't hit her. Lorica had come out of cover to get her. She understood suddenly, but she couldn't explain it to him - not least because she was dead.

And so, in the next moment, was he. He had come after her, even though it was too late to save her.

She knew - even though he had made her promise not to do the same - he would die by her side in the real battle too.
