It was hard looking for work.

Kate had never done it before. Her parents were relatively wealthy, and she had taken advantage of that wealth long after she had really had any right to do so. But now things were different, and she was taking responsibility for herself finally.

Finding a job that didn't need any skills or experience was unsurprisingly challenging, however.

She sipped her coffee and sighed, scanning the classifieds. Even pub chefs needed prior experience.

You should be a singer, the Torch whispered in her mind, an image appearing to make its offer more tempting. Kate grimaced and gestured at the paper in irritation. Do you see an ad for that in here? she thought back. The Torch sulked and Kate turned the page in irritation.

If you go to clubs you can see if there are any who need singers. You could be famous, the Torch wheedled.

"I don't want to be famous!" Kate said under her breath, getting a strange look from the man at the next table and a hiss from the Torch. It gave an angry scream of protest when she added "I'm not even sure I want to sing again, really."

The man at the next table cleared his throat and Kate sighed. Much though she hated to admit it, maybe the Torch was right. Maybe singing was her only real job opportunity. She couldn't type, she couldn't cook, and she hated using the telephone even on a personal basis.

She could feel the Torch gloat as she got up from the table. Don't expect this to be successful, she thought warningly, but it was too late.
