The first movie - "Ben Hur" it was called - was over. Aethelfrith had enjoyed it; it was a good allegory, and it gave her ideas toward her own film.
Silver put his hat on her head as he got up to change discs (she still didn't quite understand how it worked, but had faith she would eventually), and she couldn't help but smile. There was something infectiously buoyant about his attitude. He nearly always had a smile on his face, and she often found that she was smiling back at him.
His scent, too, was oddly comforting. He smelled like an animal - a dog, perhaps. Sometimes she noticed others react to it as if it were an unpleasant odour, but it was merely pungent. Pervasive. The church often smelled of him even after he left.
He sat down heavily next to her once again, recollecting his hat and putting it on his own head. It was beaten out of shape and his jacket was slightly threadbare. Aethelfrith approved; better to give money to the church than spend it on ostentatious clothing. Not that he gave money to the church (yet), but he did spend money on improving the church, which was nearly as good.
The music blared and the screen brightened. "The 10 Commandments" was starting.
Aethelfrith gave the Lord a quick prayer of thanks for sending Silver (and Constance) to protect and guide her in her hour of need. Truly she was blessed indeed.
