Charlotte was all of a sudden very aware that she was surrounded by vampires. And a fair number of them looked angry. And hungry.
She gripped her laptop tighter - she'd picked it up in case she had to use it as a weapon, and although the fight was over she still felt in danger. With a shaky smile at the robed man behind her (she didn't know his name, hadn't spoken to him), Charlotte made her way to a seat. She could feel her pulse racing, and every glance in her direction made it seem that everyone in the entire room could hear it. She willed it to slow, to quiet, forcing herself to concentrate on putting her laptop away. She saw a fleck of paint on the handle of her briefcase and removed it before gripping the handle in both hands.
Markus sat down next to her, and she could feel herself relax. There was just something about his smile that was comforting. He would protect her. He wouldn't let anyone hurt her. She smiled at him, listening to him talk. It was fine. Everything would be fine.
