In the darkness of the alleyway, there was no-one to see the slight glow and shimmer in the air as a portal to another world opened and closed, nor the man who stepped through it.

He glanced up and down the street, then leaned against a wall, rummaging around the bottom of a bag for something, with a sigh. This world always felt different. The air was heavier, the pull of gravity just not quite the same as the other places he spent his time, and adjusting would always take a while. Eventually, his hand closed around the phone, and he thumbed it on as he pulled it out of the bag.

Another few moments passed, and the glow from the screen lit the grin that flashed across his face as he saw the date and time display. Apparently, it was 28:79 on the 68th of June, 1964. Electronics never did like being dragged from one world to the another, and just couldn’t cope with it.

Ignoring the messages that bleeped at him, he dialled the first number on his contacts list and waited for an answer. After what felt like forever, it stopped ringing, and he spoke.

“Hey, it’s me.” A pause. “What do you mean, do I know what time it is? Of course I don’t, I’ve just fricking well got back. Oh. 3am? Really? Sorry.”

For a moment, he moved the phone away from his ear, as the voice on the other end launched into another tirade, and he grinned again. There were some things that never got old.

“You done? Good. Right, well, I’ve just got back. No, there wasn’t any real sign of them. Found a couple of places that they stopped at, but no-one seems to have seen them after the last one. Trail just kinda peters out after a while. They either came back, or something else happened to them. Managed to find a couple of things they left behind, but not enough to even guess what they were really up to, or wher to go next. I’ll drop them off at some point, but I don’t think you’ll get anything useful out of them.”

“Yeah, probably. Any idea where that other stash might be? No, I didn’t think so. Well, give me a call when you know something. I’ll either be here, or you can leave a message. I might even check them…”

“Alright, already. Go back to sleep. I’ll give you a call in a couple of days.”

“Yeah, you too.”

The conversation over, Walker hung up, and looked around again. The messages could wait for a while, but there was a much more important thing to sort out.

“So, where the hell am I?”
