Chicago, 2008
"You can't leave, Tommy!"
Tommy turned in the elevator and grinned. "Watch me, or stop me, but don't lecture me."
Janice grabbed his arm. "You're part of the web, Tommy; he won't let you go."
"But I'm not, am I? I'm the loose thread; never made the connection. He'll never even know I'm gone. You'll find another HR guy and slot him into place."
"And what if I... if we don't want another HR guy?"
"There are plenty who know the business." Tommy touched her cheek. "Maybe the next one won't be quite so blind to your charms."
Janice pulled sharply away. "Screw you!" she snapped.
"I think that's my point in a nutshell," he sighed regretfully. "I'm sorry, Janice, but I have to go. I have a flight to catch if I'm going to be out of JFK before dawn."
"You'll hate England," she warned him. "Warm beer, bad teeth and the blood tastes like tea."
"Oh, Janice, me ol' China," Tommy laughed, his East Side accent sliding into East End. "Didn' I ever tell you? Lunnon born and bred."
The elevator doors slid shut on Janice's astonished face and the car carried Tommy out of the web.
