Post the police raids on the sewers in Amsterdam ...
"Dolly,
We must meet. Can you come to the hospital?
Simanti"
Dolly looked at the text and sighed. She so didn’t want to go and see an officer of the court right now; but all Sim had to do was Summon her and she’d have no choice.
At least this way she walked in under her own volition.
The hospital was pretty much deserted. Dolly shrugged, assuming that all the nursing staff were busy on wards and not wandering the corridors. Sim was in a room quite close to the entrance, seemingly drinking a cup of tea.
Elders. Get weirder by the decade.
Dolly dropped the obfuscate and coughed politely; resulting in Sim looking up and politely greeting her. She gestured to a seat, but Dolly stayed standing, hovering as close to the door as she could without causing offence.
Sim sighed and asked Dolly to relate what had happened. Dolly sighed and thought carefully, trying to make sure she didn’t miss anything relevant as she relived the scene. Described how she’d upended her computer tower and yanked the memory card and hard drive out. The screams of the ghouls and coppers alike, as they shot wildly in response to her sire terrifying them. The tear gas making her ghoul choke; before someone shot her in the chest. That the place didn’t look like a terrorist cell... more like a BDSM porn shoot Dolly thought privately.
She finished her story, looking at Sim and hoping that was it. Sim asked a few more questions, focusing on the possibility of a breach of the First, and Dolly tried to reassure her that, as far as she was aware, nothing left behind would scream Vampires are Real.
“Did you at any point see Mr Hogarth?” Dolly blinked, slighted bemused by the question. Why would Mr Hogarth be in the Nosferatu warrens?
“No, not since I saw him at Eve’s party.” Mainly from behind a pillar. Sim seemed amused that Dolly had been avoiding her; and Dolly explained about not wanting Mr Wax to find out she’d not obeyed his message and immediately headed back to Amsterdam. They had a brief discussion about what had caused the raid; and what Dolly had done to repair any potential damage.
Please can I go now? The question was half forming on Dolly’s lips, when Sim told her someone wished to meet her. Dolly schooled her expression as a smartly dressed man shimmered into view.
Not a Nos. Likely a Mekhet. Oh fuck …
Inside her, Dolly’s Beast screamed in fear. The man radiated power; although not as much as some it was still enough to make her take steps backwards and want to run. Dolly swallowed, only half listening to Sim’s introduction as she fought for control.
"Mlle Dolly Mix, this is M. Henry Holloway of the Second Estate. M. Holloway, Dolly Mix, childe of Charlie Benedict Wax. I do not recall are you released or not Mlle Dolly?"
"Depends who you ask. According to my sire I'm not." Dolly tried to focus on Sim, ignoring the man who stood slightly to one side.
"Oui, that has me very puzzled. When you were sired he was in Eclipse oui? I do not understand how that would occur."
“Sorry. I can’t tell you.” Dolly’s voice was flat.
“That is of course your choice.”
"Not exactly. I've been given permission to tell what I know to one person ... and you're not Mr. Wax. I don't want to piss off someone like Leviticus on top of everything else by spilling Crone business." Dolly hoped that would end the discussion, and it seemed to do so.
Unfortunately the next topic wasn’t any easier. Holloway smiled at her, the predator in him obvious.
"Dolly do you know anything about the Brood being active in Amsterdam"
Dolly was thrown by the question. Brood in Southampton – everyone should know about that. Brood in Amsterdam? She shook her head, unconsciously taking another step backwards.
“Only Southampton.” He nodded and smiled, possibly trying to put her more at her ease.
It didn’t work.
"Dolly I will treat you with the truth. I do not believe you have anything to fear from me. I have a good relationship with the Carthians..." Really? That’s nice Dolly kept her thoughts to herself, remembering what Ana had said at the Carthian meeting; waiting for the other shoe to drop.
"We have a problem though. In your catacombs, perhaps the Brood... I have sensed Diablerie…” Dolly stared at him; biting back a sarcastic response. "Do you know about this?” he paused and looked at her, his expression unpleasant. "Speak with truth."
Dolly shook her head and babbled about people dying; once more her feet pulling her towards the door.
The pair of them started to talk at her, voices soft in a flawed attempt to persuade her of their good intentions. Dolly repeated that she didn’t know anything, that she knew Brood were bad and pointed out she’d helped fight them in Southampton. They nodded and Dolly sighed with relief.
Short lived relief.
"Dolly I am just going to confirm the truth of your words. Please relax your mind..."
Dolly bit down the torrent of swear words, the urge to punch him and then flee. Instead she tried to concentrate on not letting him see her entire head; mentally erecting doors.
I’m not lying. I’ve no clue. Please don’t dig for anything else … it’s private or secret … please … She felt him digging for her memories of Hugh and she quickly flashed an image of him at Eve’s party, the memory of looking at him from behind a pillar, Max, Elaine and Twist at her side.
She screwed up her courage and asked how he knew about a diablerie, figuring surely if people could do that it would be easy to locate such criminals. Holloway gestured, referring to the gifts of the Mekhet, and then said something that froze her blood.
"I have been inside your Catacombs and saw the location, visited via another realm. Though now I need you to guide me there tonight so I can find out what happened."
“No.”
The word was out before Dolly could censor it. The effect at any other time would have been comical; he stared at her in slight disbelief; obviously unused to being refused. Sim looked at Holloway.
"If you both would wait one moment. M. Holloway, why do you wish to re-enter the catacombs? They have had mortal police and murder occurring in them for some days. Most evidence will be disturbed now will it not?"
Holloway glanced at Sim. "The Police are not in the area that I need, if I am there in person then I will be able to sense who was diablerised and who did such a foul deed. It was very recent, but time is of importance here." Sim nodded and looked at Dolly.
"Dolly... why wont you take M. Holloway into the catacombs? You will be evacuating them anyway."
Like hell we will. Do you have any clue how big they are you stupid drugged up tart? Dolly stopped her thought hurriedly, barely listening to Holloway’s next comment of bring Sim and how he could cloak them all. He obviously felt that Sim’s presence would reassure Dolly of his good intentions. So you want me to take two people down into the Necropolis instead of one. And this makes this better how? Dolly stared at them both in disbelief. They were Elders, surely they understood what they were asking?
Evidently not.
"I am a neonate. I've not been released. I hold no position – not within the Court of Amsterdam, nor within my clan. I do not have the right or authority to make the decision to allow members not of the Blood into the territory of the Clan.
It doesn't matter if you think you can mask us all - if I take you in there my life will be forfeit. You need to find Mr Wax - as far as I know he's the only one who can say yay or nay.” Dolly explained it carefully, feeling as though she was trying to talk to a pair of five year olds and explain that fire was hot.
"Dolly, I speak with the voice of both Princes, and it occurred with in my Regency. It is not clan territory. It is territory granted by the Prince. Your Sire has not shown himself since the attack." Holloway joined with Sim, his voice soft.
“The Court needs your assistance..." Dolly stared at Sim steadily.
"I'm sorry Sim, but I can't. If Mr Wax doesn't kill me, someone else in the Clan will.” Dolly hoped it would end the discussion.
It didn’t.
"I can guarantee your safety. They would not cross me." Dolly nearly laughed in Holloway’s face.; and told him unless he was with her twenty four seven he could not guarantee that. Sim asked if she knew what diablerie was, and she told her what Hogarth had told Ana Diablerie holds its own punishment. Sim kept pushing; saying Holloway had sensed someone consuming a soul, and surely Dolly didn’t want to live in a domain that contained such a monster. She told Dolly that in Charlie’s continued absence it was her decision …
Dolly fought for control. There was a cold terror in the pit of her stomach that had nothing to do with the idea of a diablerist – just what her sire would do to her if she led this pair into the warrens.
"I don't believe in God. I don't believe in souls. I do know that if I do this I .Will. Be. Killed. “She racked her memory and came up with a solution. “Fucks sake, there are two Nosferatu in this city - both Lance, and both with positions at court. One's Prince Bishop Gerhad Jordan; and the other's Jaap Adlar, Keeper of the Elysium. Go ask them."
Dolly found her foot was against the door as she’d backed away again.
"Jaap will not leave the hospital until this is done. M. Jordan is currently missing. You will not be killed"
Jesus H Christ, what does it take to get through to you idiots Dolly bit down the words.
"That's not my problem. I can't take you."
Sim turned to Henry "Can you find your answers without entering the Underground? I have several gentlemen ready to begin filling it with concrete."
Dolly blinked as she carefully began to pry the door open with her foot.
"If you fill it with concrete, then the Clan will not be happy. Just sayin." She turned and fled through the door, the roaring of her Beast in her ears; instinctively ignoring the call behind her and instead letting the shadows flow about her. She half expected to be followed, but managed to sprint out of sight and then through an open door way before they decided to follow her.
*********************
Dolly splashed through the tunnel of the sewer, having smashed her mobile and dumped it in a canal. She hugged her arms about her as she tried to work out where to go next.
” I have several gentlemen ready to begin filling it with concrete." Sim’s words echoed in her mind.
She needed to warn the Clan. Stupid bloody Daeva. Stupid bloody Mekhet. Stupid Lance and Invictus. Stupid Elders and their stupid games.
She looked round, figured out where she was and headed towards the centre of the necropolis. Maybe she could find someone who could stop Sim before her workers got a nasty shock.
Maybe she could find her sire …
