The Master was making music again.

Simon wouldn’t dream of telling him that of course, the Master would not approve. Alpha was working and the sounds were not designed to be pleasing or convey emotional sensations or subconscious drives, they were a tool for understanding the nature of the universe as a scientific process.

No one else would understand that. No one had heard the music through the master’s own ears, seen the patterns of coloured numbers that worked inside them, picked out the interwoven sequences of reality that the Alpha knew existed and has bestowed the knowledge to him and him alone.

He might have shared his senses with that new Mekhet bitch, the pleasant, kind one whom had fed from him, but Simon knew she didn’t understand Alpha as he did, had not heard the music that underpinned the universe and translated quantum uncertainty into translucent harmonies and soaring discords that Alpha could analyse, predict and control.

She was just another vampire – ODM5487: Fisher, Eliza. Mekhet of the Ordo Dracul, student to the Master. Alpha would analyse, predict and control her too, shape her into something better and stronger but no more important than the others, no more special that ODG2567 or CCD4865 or IV1421. They were all just vampires and no matter what they did, they would never hear the music that the Master made.

He had heard it, had seen and tasted it, the music beyond the world. He was subject 739, chosen to look after Alpha, chosen from the thousands of blind, stupid mortals to live here and uncover the true nature of the universe, to be obedient and faithful and to observe because one day he would be Beta, the first of the Master’s children,

One day, he would hear the music for himself, but for now he must help Alpha to learn more.

Cold, staring eyes flickered open and bore into the Ghoul’s own.

“739, you will begin the file again and overlay source 87639a.”

Simon nodded to the pale, thin vampire sat cross legged on the floor of his bare living quarters and selected a new file from the laptop, causing a second wave of screeching, ugly white noise to join the first in a jarring, disorientating cacophony.

The Master was making music again and it was just for him.
