Blood stiffens on the heavy fabric and head rings. Shake to clear it. Shake shake and nothing the blast and the scorched taste of powder. Vulture so close and his smell is home and belonging and can't look at him for shame.

Hand: hot/cold, his rough, hers ... hers. Looks her in the eye and nods and turns and walks trying not to turn back and run for her because there must be something he can do but there ain't.

And there's a moment like the world holding its breath and here they come and in that split second thinks of course and knows it but Dominic wouldn't have given up so coughs blood and digs feet into rough earth and away, feet flying

and for a moment -- pure animal, pure hunter, strong body racing through this strange world of home scents no one else knows sights as familiar and strange as dreams and the pain vanishes and head up and almost smiles, seeking the path and then there's a shove

just a gentle shove but legs go and the hedge turns sideways and the distant flicker of sky
